Just a quick update before we get on our 23 hour train ride. We arrived in Shanghai slightly sleepy after a 17 hour train ride and not much sleep as the smell from the toilets kept wafting passed us. The city is so different from Beijing and Xi'an and arriving on Saturday meant the shopping areas were packed in was manic, but it woke us all up. We visited the flagship Barbie store which has just opened and I acted like I was 5 years old getting a bit too excited (nothing unusual there then).
Yesterday we headed to the Shanghai Museum which is in the peoples square, such a contrast to the manic streets surrounding it. It was a fascinating place and had a huge collection of ancient artifacts. We then headed towards the Yu gardens which was located in Old Shanghai, where there are some stunning buildings, unfortunately a lot of people and some strange smells. Once in the gardens it was all calm and tranquil and we could have spent all day there amongst the pagodas and rockeries.
As it is two of our groups birthday's today we decided to go out last night and celebrate, first a stunning acrobats show (which Shanghai is famous for and a must see if you visit) I think we all had goosebumps by the end of it. Obviously next came food and again it was yummy. Then guess what.......KARAOKE and I was the second one up with 'I will survive' after only one beer, but I loved it and it was hard to prise the mike out of my hand, especially because we had our own private room. Pete impressed us with his funky moves and high notes to a bit of Justin Timberlake, then we took the stage together for Elton John and Kiki Dee 'Don't go breaking my heart'. I have caught the bug so be warned when we get back. We started singing at 11.30pm and didn't get into bed until 5am this morning, it is amazing where the time goes when you are having fun and singing badly.
Thanks for all your messages, we will hopefully get some more pics online soon and have some more exciting adventures to tell.
