Today was a rock day, and the reason I say that is for two reasons, one is because if you head to Djúpivogur (we called it DJ for short) you will find J.F.S Handcrafts in a small fishing village the size of approximately Ontario Place. This was our first stop in the morning after a long drive up and in the fjords on the eastern coast of Iceland. Gorgeous scenery once again, many impromptu stops to take pictures of the coast lines, swans , and mountain lakes that reflected everything but! But back to Jón, whose home we happen visit just before we almost gave up on this little town after our lattes and macaroon snack. It was about 11:30 and we figured that we could take a quick look at the little handcrafts shop before heading off seeing as the entrance was free, and nothing really is free in Iceland except the parking. Well two hours later after several stories about rocks, some discussion on the expeditions across the northern waters near Denmark, watching seagulls fees their young, and a case of mistaken photo taking exercise (ask Bonnie)...we managed to leave the little town where Jon lives. A little heavier with rocks in our pockets thanks to him as well! It was great, and my sister in law Angie will be happy to know that Jon, even against the advice of his Icelandic family and friends, is a Manchester United fan! The next stop was supposed to be close to our next guesthouse, and because of my mistaken ability to read the 24hour clock, I thought it was 3/30 and not 1:30pm in the afternoon. So I felt that instead of spending another 3 hours in the car driving that we would head the suggestion from Jon to take Öxi Mt. Road as the shortcut so that we could drop off out things at the guesthouse and head out to the close by forest area for another hike. Here is where the second part of rock day starts. The next rock was the giant mountain we drove up! The mountain was another type of scenic route suggested by locals as a way to get to our next destination quicker. So we followed their advice and by the time we got to this Öxi road, our GPS was lost; and it pictured the end of the Ring road as an unfinished line stopping into nothing and our car floating on water. The road forked into two choices. The long smooth highway over the rest of the eastern fjords, or, the much gravelled unpaved road over the mountain! Yes that's right...over the mountain! Being the daredevil that I am I turned over to Thelma and said..let's do it! I turned on the 4x4 and the ass kicking music, and started givin her up the 17degree inclined dirt roads! My motivation pumped as I saw the little Audi cars zooming passed me the other way! Damn European drivers! When you see how high we got you won't believe it, we were literally walking in the clouds, where you see the snow at the top of the mountains! After getting to the top we stopped and took a couple pics because I know my brother won't believe me. The rest of the ride was an amazing view if green mountain pastures and lakes as blue as the sky. It did not take us much longer to get to our guesthouse in Eyvindara. And that is where we are settling into our little cabin in the woods (with wifi) after we do our final hike into, let me get this right, Hallormsstaoarskogar forest area. Since it was close to 4pm and we were getting hungry we thought it best to do a quick jaunt, with Beaver, before we had our dinner (Subway subs because we like being adventurous) and settled in for the night. So that is where we are now, me laying in my bed blogging, Bonnie drinking her 10000isk beer, and fiddling with her camera. Tomorrow we head north where warnings of snow storms are being told to us. We planing being safe, but being warm might be the harder thing to do! Till tomorrow!
