Douglas Brown's Travels
After a good nights sleep I felt like a new man. An early breakfast in the accommodation resturant then a shared taxi into the city. The accommodation manager had a friend with a taxi and we got a special rate of a flat 5euro to the city (on the meter fare showed 16 euro. The city has a good feel to it. Despite its turbulent past it is very relaxed and pretty city. The taxi driver dropped us at the Sunday markets and we spent an hour pottering around the stalls and my pockets were deep and my arms short. We walked over the dragon bridge ( dragons are very big in Ljibijana ever since St George slayed the dragon). The myth is that if a virgin crosses the Dragon Bridge the dragons at each end will wag their tales. It does not say much for the local women folk that the dragon has never been seen to wag its tail since it was built in 1894. We then took the funicular railway to the castle on the hill overlooking the city. The tour guide explained that the castle on the hill had significance ever since the beginnings of the town. And had been demolished three times and rebuilt buy different occupies of the city. I wish I had my dictaphone with me to record the tour guides talk, as I could not possible remember all the facts. Being Sunday the street performers were out entertaining the crowds. We found a little cafe that sold sausage in a roll and of course cold beer. Just what we wanted on a very warm day. It was then time to stroll around the city and soak up the magnificent architecture. Then we had a look at the city from the river on a one our river cruise. Then back to the accommodation to get changed before heading out for pizza for the evening meal. I told you they were the best pizzas I have ever had.
