This morning was our last morning at Hospitalfield, so I woke up early to walk around the property one last time before we left. Our group got Rod, Angie, and the other staffers whiskey and wine, but I also left a heart made out of chocolate bars on my bed as a thank you. We took our group photo in front of Hospitalfield House said goodbye to our home for 2 weeks, and then hit the road for Glasgow. A little over halfway to Glasgow is Stirling, so we made a stop at the Stirling Castle. One aspect of Stirling Castle that is different from other castles I have visited on this trip is the degree of recreation of the time period when Stirling was in its initial use. Eroded statues had supplemental material to take the place of had been to show what they originally looked like. The ceilings and mantle paintings were repainted, and although it looked a bit cheesy and unrealistic for the time period, it was still interesting think that possibly that is what it looked like. In other castles I have seen interior paintings that are original, but that doesn't mean that the colors resemble anything close to what they used to be. Anyways, the castle was a very nice one:) and has a magnificent view which was especially nice since the sun finally decided to show itself. We continued on our last leg to Glasgow after leaving Stirling Castle. When we arrived back at the good ole Holiday Inn Express we checked into our rooms and then Grace, Ashley, and I met up and walked to a few vintage shops and print shop that Alison and I had visited on our last stay. The hunger struck Ashley, so we went into this trendy cafe/bar that is only a block or so from the hotel to get something to tide over. We really enjoyed the feel of the place, so we planned to come back later to see what the scene would be like at night. We walked around a few shops in the city center before heading back to HIE to meet up for dinner. Al, Don, Alison, Naomi, Ashley, Grace, and I went to the Piazza Italia in the Italian Court and oh goodness was it tasty. I ordered Spaghetti alla Carbonara, and a hazelnut and pistachio ice cream with crushed pralines on top. Needless to say it was delicious. We walked back to the hotel to gather things to work on at the cafe from earlier, and then made the short jaunt over. No intended work was completed. We went up to the bar to order our one drink for the night, and ended up talking with the bartenders until close. One if them is a photographer, so Ashley got in a full dose of art talk, one was friendly enough, but didn't spend much time talking with us, and the third is really smart and Grace and I had good conversation with him about his band, the history of Tennents Beer in Glasgow, and his pending adventure to teach in China. After asking for a recommendation of what kind of beer to get Sean brought me a microbrew called Midnight Sun that was a tasty dark beer. They gave us some good advice of places to visit, which galleries had good exhibits, and which pub/clubs to avoid, which was really nice. We walked back, excited to sleep so we could reach our next day in Glasgow.
