Today we have visited Alberton House. This house was built in 1863 and was the home of the Taylor family for over 100 years until it was bequeathed to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust by Muriel Kerr-Taylor in 1972. The house contains much of the original family furniture and collection, and some 19th century wallpapes still decorate the walls. It was opened as a house museum in 1973.
When it was built in 1863 it stood at the head of 500 acres of land. Originally a simple gabled farmhouse, additions in the 1870's, substantially changed the appearance, size and style of the house. The ballroom, verandahs and towers were the result of these additions.
This was a very interesting house .
After our visit there we went to St. Lukes Shopping Centre. The shops here in N.Z. open every day from about 7am until 10 pm. It takes a little getting used to especially on a Sunday.
The weather here gets better - I am sitting on the front deck of S & M's house. It certainly beats our cold, wet English winter.
On Friday evening S & M gave a BBQ for some of Mike's work colleagues. He has now given in his notice at work, although the Boss's are taking it as "leave of absence".
Yesterday morning we started packing up some of their belongings ready to put in store as it is only about 6 weeks now before they start their extended trip to the UK. They arrive in the UK on 10 March after visiting Brisbane and Hong Kong on the way out.
