Waking to another damp and dreary day in New York, reminded me of the saying "Your worst day on holiday is better than your best day working…"
Around 10.00am, we once again headed for the 911 memorial. Up until now, you had to book a pass online as the memorial was temporarily fenced off to the public, not sure why, but this time we didn't even recognise the area. The overnight transformation was amazing..
The two parts to the memorial are large “water features” for want of a better word, that are located in the same position the Twin Towers once stood. The memorial is very well done and offers a respectful monument to those that lost their lives.
We had a wander through the existing museum which detailed the construction and uses of the buildings prior to their collapse, along with a remembrance room for the victims. Would you believe our timing, the new museum they have been building for a few years opens the day after we leave the country!
The weather was closing in again, so we hot footed back home.
A couple of days ago, I bought tickets online to a Baseball game. The New York Yankees V The Pittsburgh Pirates. How could you come to the US and NYC and not see a game..
Due to start at 7.00pm, we calculated a travel time on the subway of 1.25 hours, plus we wanted to get in, get our seats (along with Corndogs and Beer !), so we left home about 5.00pm.
Hmmm, peak hour on the NY subway is something to behold! Undaunted, we continued on our quest for a taste of the much vaunted “Ball game” !
The few glimpses of skyline and the ever increasing dampness of our revolving group of fellow passengers suggested the weather hadn’t improved.
Eventually arriving at the Yankee Stadium, only to be told the game had been cancelled due to “inclement weather” by a smug mouthed 16 year old at the door.
What, you don’t play in the rain? I asked, which only served to elicit the condescending glare that teenagers can give… Apparently not..
Disappointed, and now slightly damp, we ducked into the stadiums Hard Rock Café, only to be faced with a ten deep queue of punters thinking exactly the same thing as us.
We bailed on that, but as we had been saving ourselves for corndogs, we were now famished and decided to back track to Grand Central station for dinner in town.
Feasting at TGIF’s on 42nd street, we headed back down to the subway and headed for home.
By the time we got to our last stop, the weather had really set in. Well prepared for stormy weather (T shirts, jeans and baseball caps), we didn’t have much choice but to get wet.
About half way home and completely saturated, we came across a lovely Chinese lady standing in the doorway of her terraced home. Smiling (I guess feeling sorry for us) and chatting away (we couldn’t understand a word), she threw us an umbrella and disappeared inside..
Finally home about 11.00pm.
