With infrequent rain, the weather in New York has been a little on the cool side. We have been trying to ride the Staten Island ferry around the Statue of Liberty since we have been here, but the river / bay is cold, windy and choppy, so we have been putting it off each day. Hopefully we will chance with fine weather while we are in the area..
Today we're heading back into Manhattan. We started at Times Square and wandered further uptown towards Columbus Circle and Central Park. Stumbling across the world head quarters for M&M's, it was impossible to walk past. Three stories of M&M products and merchandise... What a marketing machine !
It was a brisk morning, but the sun was out for a while and we decided to hire a couple of bikes for a cruise around the park… Who knew it was 4Km long and covered more than 800 acres !!
It is also surprisingly hilly !
None the less it was a pleasant ride, although the chain on my bike broke on the corner of 5th Ave and 91st street, leaving us stranded for about 30 minutes (good time for a rest) before a new bike arrived.
We’ve been told Sunday will be the best time to stroll around the park with a myriad of "Kook’s" to join us…
Grabbing lunch on Broadway, we spent a while people watching and listening to the hustle and bustle of the city. As the weather cooled off (read as, we froze our summer butts off) we headed back to the subway and home. We are getting very used to the subway, recognising signs and finally getting on the right train the first time… It’s a b***** when you realise you have been travelling “up town” when you wanted to go “down town”. At times, we even manage to get the blank “glazed over” look on our faces. All I can say is, thank God Steve Jobs got the IPod ear buds sorted, subway riders wouldn’t know what to do with themselves otherwise…
It’s almost a game now, where I try to catch someone’s eye and smile, just to see the reaction. Most just look down, but some can’t help but smile back… (Probably thinking, what’s that freak show smiling at ??)
