With the alarm set for 4.30am… It was going to be an early start to the day. One taxi, 2 aeroplanes, 1 shuttle bus, 3 trains and a van later, we arrived at our next home in Brooklyn around 5.00pm…
Shattered, we were in bed by about 8.30pm, with plans to start looking around in the morning.
George, our host has been most helpful with where to go and what to see.. Not bothering with a hire car for New York, we are using the subway to get around.
Our place is about 20 minutes by train from Time Square NYC.
Setting off about 10.00am, we headed for 34th street and grabbed breakfast at a NY diner. Moving North towards 5th Avenue, we eventually arrived at The Empire State Building. If you think the hustlers are bad in Asia, wait til you try NY… Overloaded with prices and options from bus tours that included tickets to the Statue of Liberty and Empire State, to limo services for apparently the same price as taxi's (looking for the +++ here), we decided to go it alone and try our luck at the building itself… Forewarned by the hustlers of 2 hour queues, we were relieved to find practically no delays to get to the top.
Constructed in 1931, the Empire State building was the highest in the world for almost 40 years, before relinquishing the title to the original World Trade Centre in 1970.
We are now members of the exclusive "102 club".. 102 floors (about 400m) up the Empire State…
Magnificent views on a beautiful day in Manhattan… The photos make it appear hazy, but it was really quite a clear day...
From there we headed for a quick look around Time Square and grabbed some lunch from Subway, before heading back home.
