The drive starts early, leaving Cody, the South Americans and the rodeo in our wake. We head east through Buffalo Bill State Park and on into the Bighorn Mountains. We wind slowly up and over the peak following the switchbacks all the way down into the canyon, through stunning scenery and along to the east entrance of Yellowstone. It's up again over the Sylvan Pass (8500ft) and into Fishing Bridge where we are staying for five nights. The RV park is not what we expected with everybody jammed in to tight spots with barely any space, no grill pits and a long list of things not to do. We decide not to waste any time and head straight back out to the Visitor Centre, picking up all the local maps and info before driving the short distance to Mud Volcano and Sulphur Cauldron. Nothing really prepares you for the thermal features in Yellowstone and the sights and smells are like nothing we have ever experienced before, except maybe for Brad's bedroom. We join a Ranger led tour as these are really informative and tell you loads more about the area than you would learn on your own. We cook in tonight with the strange smell of all the mudpots, fumeroles and springs strong in our noses. We all head down to the amphitheatre for the nightly Ranger talk which, this evening, is 'Heroes of Yellowstone'. We learn about early expeditions to the area in the 1800's and the eventual creation of America's first national park in 1872.
