We have decided to check out early at Fishing Bridge as it's not really what we expected and drive north to Mammoth Hot Springs where there is more to see and another campsite we like the sound of. We're treated to an impressive scenic drive over the Dunraven Pass, down through Tower-Roosevelt village and on to our destination. The campsite is basic but ten times better than what we have already experienced and, at a third of the price, even Chris is happy. We hike back into the village and make our way past Fort Yellowstone to the Lower and Upper Terraces where acidic springs cascade over pure limestone blocks in a rainbow of colour. We have been told that there is a part of the river here where you can sit and enjoy thermal runoff from a nearby hot spring. The weather has really changed over the last 24 hours or so, the temperature has dropped and rain has set in with some violent thunder and lightning to liven things up. One such thunderous downpour halts our plans and we have to sit it out, not wanting to be struck by lightning, before sitting in a hot river?! The sunshine makes a brief but well timed return to allow us to grill our dinner on the barbecue. We enjoy dinner and a great sunset before heading to our nightly Ranger talk followed by a well earned bedtime.
