Well no one slept very well last night, people were quite noisy here and it was actually quite cold in the night. Sabrina and I are sharing a room here, if Amy returns during this camp she won't fit in this room as its quite small.
This morning's breakfast was egg fried rice and bread with jam, serving ourselves has gone well so far.
Today's project work was helping to build a kindergarten, it is around a ten minute walk from the village and up a fairly steep hill, the views from the top are very nice. There wasn't a great deal of work to do, we were clearing the ground and mixing cement, we don't have enough tools so we are taking it in turns. It has been very hot and there isn't any shade, so I took the opportunity to try and tan my legs.
We left for lunch at around 11:50 so Sabrina and I washed our clothes before lunch was served to beat the after lunch rush, our lunch today was spaghetti carbonara which was quite nice.
This afternoon most of us went back to the kindergarten, while two students stayed back. Bongkud has a large eating area which is covered in boards that groups have made during their stay, so we had two students stay behind to work on ours. A small group of us remained in camp so we could go to the local primary school to teach English, a while later we found out the school was closed for Eid, so I took the opportunity to have a shower.
After snack time tonight we are having a tour of the village which I'm looking forward to, it was meant to be last night but the rain was too bad. Firstly we visited the community centre which was built by camps, it had an information board about Trevor White "Asang" who came here in the 1950's from the UK to build a sawmill, he taught the local people how to build and improved their education.
We then moved onto the school which was quite large actually, the original school was built by Asang but this is no longer standing, the chiefs generation were the first in the village to be education, so before this villagers were unable to even write their own names.
In the school there are models of all of the different types of long houses that the different tribes live in, it was quite good as they are all very different. Here in Bongkud the tribe is Dusun like it was in Luanti.
Before tea we all explored the village more, if you leave camp by going over a 'bridge' behind the long houses you can go down to the river bank for a swim, it was nice to get out a bit.
Tonight's meal was chicken carbonara, the same as lunch. After tea there was quite a big storm, the rain was heavy enough that people were showering in it. As we couldn't explore a great deal we had a camp quiz in the little hut next to the river, some of the questions were weird, and some of the things they didn't know was shocking! We also elected our jungle leader Joe that will be interesting.
