I'm now officially all templed out… like seriously. I think i've visited enough temples to now officially make me a monk or whatever the woman equivalent to a monk is.
There are 400 temples in Chiang Mai… 400!! We visited 4. Poor attempt but it takes so long!
Wat U Mong was a series of underground cave temples - pretty freaky.
Wat Chedi Luang was a massive old building, really high and had lovely little elephants all the way around it. One of there trunks had fallen off though and he looked like Zoidburg from Futurama!
Wat Phra Singh had amazing gold dragons everywhere and had really cool quotes dotted around on the trees.
And last but not least Wat Chiang Man which is the oldest temple is Chiang Mai, it didn't look particularly old but this fact is true. We caught a monk sleeping here an snapped a cheeky picture of him.
Luckily we had our little purple love machine to drive around on so managed to get to each temple via google maps, happy days.
It took a good couple of hours to visit all the temples and my feet hurt after so we decided to go for our first Thai massage, so we had a stroll (on the bike) into town after trip advising a nice place (so I could be sure James wouldn't get offered a happy ending) We booked our treatments for an hours time and went next door for a beer before our torture began.
We got showed to the same room and then the woman suddenly left. James informed me that the loose fitting clothes on the bed were intact our uniform for the night, So after so struggle of trying to make the size 22 trousers fit we were dressed and ready to be beaten.
They started us off with a cold towel to sooth our faces and some ice cold water to drink. We then got taken through for a foot soak and scrub, this was interesting! We were then taken upstairs and taken into the massage room. We were told to get changed and lie on the beds. On the bed were two little outfits, a white linen shirt and some huge shorts, its safe to say we looked hilarious! The started with a foot massage which I was fine with but James is very ticklish so I was laughing because I could imagine what he was thinking and his little face all screwed up!
Then they moved up the leg… and kept moving… I feared I had walked into something I didn't want to but she stopped. Thank god. They pressed right into your groin for a while and held the pressure, such a weird feeling. We were both thinking OMG, I could feel my heart beat, very strongly in the groin. So strange!
After half hour we were told to turn on our front and the Thai massage began, its a weird thing its like so painful but yet feels really good, She punched me several times (apparently this is part of the massage). At multiple points throughout the massage I could hear all of James's bones and joints clicking. Especially his bad knee! They were seriously abusing us, our whole bodies were bent and manipulated into several strange positions. After she had finishing pulling my arms and legs around we finished with a nice hot oil massage, which was amazing and relaxing after the beating we had just endured.
The whole thing took 2 hours in total and it only cost us 1000 baht which is £20, we managed to get a special offer which they were running which worked out to be everything we wanted, perfect :-)
Once we had composed ourselves we went straight outside and walked bang mack right into the middle of the Sunday walking market, by this time we were rather famished so decided to take on some street food. We started with some pork balls (more like balls of fat) Then we had a pork pop…. I still don't know what that was.
Some sweet potato balls, little balls of sweet potato heaven.
Pork satay sticks and some dim sums.
Then we decided to go abit wild and try some quails eggs. They were actually lovely and such a convenient size for eating on the street.
The best part of the night in which we had several of were the mango and passionfruit smoothies - Fresh fruit just blended in a mixer with ice, The best thing ever!!
Our street food night was finished with a waffle shaped like a fish filled with chocolate. Only in Thailand. The whole night cost us around 100 baht (£2) and we were pretty full by the end of it. Each meal was literally 10-20 baht! Bargain.
We ended our night again with a Chang in an outside camper van bar called 48 Garage, 50 baht (£1) for a bottle, cheapest yet. We then headed back and crashed out for the night ready to feel the pain from our massage in the morning!
J&K over and out!
