It was a short ride today - but it was a bit of work. First, we made it through a couple of towns in New York- mainly Buffalo. Definitely east coast urban riding! After that, it was a nice approach to the head of the river and crossing over into Canada. We did walk our bikes over the bridge, as instructed by the signs - but it seems that most of the others in the group rode. Oh well. Upon arrival on the Canadian side, we followed this signs to the border person, who told us to go across all of the lanes of traffic to the building. We did - then were directed unclearly through the doors. Eventually to the agent, who scolded us because our tour company had not appeared with a guide and manifesto. Anyway, we got in - and then had to get back across all of the traffic to get back on route.
A LONG ride along the river, over 12 miles of just river/street/smaller street-path/ and houses. It was actually a lot of mental work to ride on the path as it twisted, turned, crossed streets, and was bumpy. I think the road might have been calmer!
I got so excited as the falls came into view. Butterflies in the tummy...something about all that water. It was a pretty amazing sight as we approached the falls. I suppose the shipping of the passport was worth it!
THe falls themselves were crowded on the Canadian side. We spent a little time and then decided to cross back over to the U.S. We found ourselves on the bridge with lots of car traffic, and decided we were supposed to be on the wide path - so hopped over the guard rail with our bikes. After a nice photo shoot, we got to U.S. customs, peeked in the building - decided we'd better bring the bikes in, and were promptly yelled at by the border guy that we had to go through the car entrance. I asked if we had to go over the railing to get there "yes, and you shouldn't have been on the path anyway! (meanly). So... hopped back over the bike rail, handed our bikes across, and then cut in the traffic line. (unhappy cars - it was like being in a crowded toll plaza...but NOT IN A CAR!!!
THey did seem to open an extra lane because of all this. I got to the check zone, and got yelled at because my tire was about 5 inches into the 1.5 foot wide white line that the big sign (hard to see on a bike - placed for car viewing) said not to cross.
Finally up to the border lady... "citizenship! How long were you in Canada? What are you bringing in?" I started the list, 'sunscreen, a small towel, advil, a thermometer, tampons, bike tube, tire irons....' it took her a while to stop me and let me throough. Peg took even longer! I guess the computer was demanding a license plate and the person did not know how to override that part.
Nancy, carolyn and I met up to go on the Maid of the Mist. It was amazing! I'll do it again tomorrow if Karina wants to . Soggy and loud and exhilarating!
After some ice cream and expresso, back to the hotel to relax before our Denny's dinner. We're having wine at 8:30 and then out to see the light show at 9pm on the falls.
Ahhh vacation!
