I made it back to Rochester a couple minutes ago after what turned out to be a little longer of a trip than expected. I actually worked today until 3pm then packed up the Sebring rental and hit the road back home. About 20 minutes up the road, I got distracted and took a wrong turn. Looking for a spot to turn around, I came upon this private driveway and pulled in. At the end of the driveway is this mammoth of a white van which was so stuck in the snow bank that the white-on-white blended in. This poor old lady with a large rip in the middle of her jacket was shoveling the snow out with a very disconcerting look. We made eye contact and at that moment, there was no way I could leave her to get herself out. I grabbed what I could from my work bag (which ended up being a pair of large sheers) and made myself available to start hacking away at the ice on the driveway underneath her tires. This lady, all of the age of 74, had an adorable english accent but stank like dog urine...and she actually had two dogs in the inside of the van. After 45 minutes of hacking ice and shoveling snow with a Fisher Price-esque metal shovel, we finally rocked her boat of a vehicle free. She thanked me obsessantly and made an offer for me to visit her in the Outer Banks whenever I wanted. The offer was a grand one but after taking a couple whiffs of the inside of the van, I doubt I will be seeing her ever again. It felt really good to help out someone in desperate need. It is hopefully good juju coming my way just in time for the cruise. But it's more than just good juju...it's just the right thing to do. It's so important to just be a good person and be good to others.
Hitting the hay early, have to wake up to catch my flight to Orlando at 7am. Happy Valentine's Day everybody! Missing my lady tons but will be seeing her shortly.
