Ahhhhhhhhhhh...the last couple of days of a tour are always some of the sweetest days. It's really been the only time in 4 weeks that I've known for certain what work I have left. I took some me time this afternoon and tackled the Appalachian Trail in Kent, which is about an hour north of my hotel. I never took the opportunity to hike it when I was working in Kent all those years ago..partly because I didn't really know where it was. There are three different access points in the small town and I only found two of them. One was off of Bull's Bridge and the other was about 2 miles down a dirt road off another dirt road. Of course, I chose to do a majority of my hiking on at the second point. This was the best one of the bunch from what I researched, as it was the closest to St. John's Ledges which, in the summertime, probably would have provided a miraculous view of the Berkshire Mountain range. However, lucky for me, it was March and it was still fairly wintry and dead. No snow on the ground though!
I parked and walked up about 500 yards to the beginning of the climb up the ledges. St John's Ledges is an area with a large collection of rock slabs and stone walls that, while doing the trail, you have to scale and rock climb. I found this climb to be surprisingly more tough than the climb of Camelback Mountain in Phoenix which was another rock climb to reach the summit. I would have to suspect it was the trecherous wet leaf piles, muddy terrain, and thorny plant-life were to blame, but to blame in a good way. I also could've done without the ticks in which I saw parading on my clothes...hopefully no Lyme Disease in the near future!! It was rewarding enough just to have free time to spend and not be stuck at my hotel desk like I was last night. This summer, when I go up to Chesuncook, climbing Mt. Katahdin is definitely going to be a must-do. Talk about a spectacular view, nothing beats green trees and blue waters that slowly fade into the horizon.
