After a bumpy ride back from the Kinabatangan river including a broken down bus we were dropped off by our driver in what appeared to be the outskirts of Lahad Datu with a friend from uncle Tan's. We spent an hour or so wandering around the streets searching for a hotel in the blistering heat through what was clearly 'the wrong side of town' before finding an odd hotel where the staff seemed to be very confused by our presence. After our long search for a hotel we assumed this was our only option and after refusing the freshly painted first room we were offered we settled in and had our first shower in 3days which was certainly welcome as we were both getting a bit pungent!
Revitalised and energised we decided to see what Lahad Datu had to offer, along with our friend John from Uncle Tan's. The answer to this turned out to be 'nothing' as the place that we had been dropped off by the bus driver was in fact the centre which included loads of hostels that we must have completely missed earlier. There was however plenty of eateries and 2 meals, a bar and an extremely loud karaoke bar later we decided to call it a night and catch up on some sleep after too many early morning safaris.
The next morning after some breakfast and a goodbye to John we decided that given there wasn't much to see it was about time we tried to organise our rucksacks which were bursting at the seams. We made the decision that our hats which have served us well so far were beyond repair after being squashed in the red rucksack and now resembled more of a hat that Robin Hood might wear rather than a normal person in 2012. These were promptly retired to the bin, though in hindsight these could have been teamed well with our new archery skills learnt in KK. Gives us a good excuse to buy new hats in India!
