Having enjoyed the fresh air and trekking of the Cameron highlands we thought it best we head to Malaysia's capital, Kualor Lumpur and our flight to borneo before the celebrations for the Chinese new year started.
Staying in the heart of china town we expected great things of the area with lots of fire crackers, fireworks and activity, in reality most of the Chinese left the city the day we arrived and we soon discovered the Chinese people celebrate their new year at home having a feast of roast pork with the family ( very jealous). Despite this we stayed up till midnight awaiting the fireworks, finding it strange that lots of businesses were shutting up by 10pm. Unfortunately the firework show did not happen and we walked the silent / deserted streets of Malaysia's largest city occasionally bumping into the odd westerner all looking for the same thing!!
We did however see lots of traditional Lion dancing which included people dressed up as a long lions dancing to music and scaring the demons away. In the end this turned out to be a bit of a pain as the music was mainly the banging of drums and generally took place in the malls.
Despite this we still had a good evening and it was nice to see such a usually frantic city do quiet. On the other days we walked for miles exploring the place visiting loads of free museums, from historic to photography to fabric to butterflies and orchids, all different but all interesting and not since the early travelling days of hong kong have we walked so much.
We also decided that seeing as though we were in a cosmopolitan city we should civilise ourselves and both got haircuts (Gwenno's first since leaving) and sample the city's famous malls stocking up on gear before the remote Borneo.
A 5-45 am start and a verrrry long day of travel on our last day saw us travel from peninsular south east Asia to Borneo where we write this blog ahead of our next adventure of jungles, mountains, caves, coral reefs, headhunter tribesman and lots and lots of creepy crawleys - we can't wait, especially as we are now well prepared!
