Hello everyone!!!!
Well first of all we would all like to apologise for any complaints previously made about the hot weather! After spending 3 days in the Blue Mountains where it was misty, rainy and cold ie English weather, we are now fully appreciating every moment of sunshine!
We arrived in Katoomba, Blue Mountains on Sunday and couldn't see very much due to the mist. We did however manage to find the hostel and after some lunch we decided that we wouldn't let the weather stop us so we headed off to see some sights at a place called Scenic World - and it was about as exciting as the name suggests! The highlight was a trip down the world's steepest railway - something which Jen found rather traumatic - which took us right down to the valley floor where there was slightly less mist so at least we could see where we were going. Went for a quick walk and got on the cable car to take us back up the mountain but views were non-existent due to the aforementioned mist. That night we ventured into Katoomba and chose from the 'many'restaurants. We should mention that Katoomba is a very small town containing not much more than charity shops and cafes, so its a bit like Hinckley really! (all you Hinckley peeps know what im talking about). Despite this we found a restaurant serving the Australian speciality of kangaroo which Becki and Sam had - tasted a bit like steak.
Next day we spent the morning trekking round the mountains seeing the Katoomba falls and cascades, after walking up and down a lot of steps we headed back to Katoomba for some home made lunch. We had an equally action packed afternoon as we headed off to do a bit of abseiling. We went with the smaller company that wasn't fully booked which was good as it meant it was just the three of us and the guide who also provided us with free chocolate and sweets - we were very happy! We did a few abseils, the highest being a vertical drop of 25metres (see pictures for proof). So by the end we were all bouncing down the cliff like pros. The afternoon was made even better when on our return to the office we were handed a free beer each - amazing! We spent the evening chilling at the hostel in front of a log fire with a box of wine.
Tuesday morning we decided to stay in Katoomba to see if we could get a glimpse of some of the famous Blue Mountain views, however the weather was not on our side again, and as illustrated in our pics it was still a wall of mist (we will show you the postcards of what the views are meant to look like on our return). Feeling slightly disheartened we wandered round the shops waiting for our bus and happened to come across a free wine tasting session; we tasted about 8 wines ranging from white to rose to red to dessert wines - and all this before 11.30am! So the morning wasn't a total waste of time. On our way back we stopped at the town of Leura and found a fab sweet shop where we stocked up on our supplies. Back in Sydney we returned to the hostel in Bondi and sat on the newly discovered roof terrace trying to soak up some rays.
Nice and early on Wednesday morning we headed into the city as we were off to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. After getting suited up in some sexy boiler suits and being taught how to climb a ladder we started the climb to the summit. It wasn't too strenuous as we kept stopping to have pictures taken and admire the views (you will have to wait until we get back to see the pics as we weren't allowed to take cameras up the bridge ourselves but we bought one of the guides pics of us). Definately well worth it, saw some amazing views of the harbour and the city. Spent the afternoon on the beach until it started raining. In the evening when it had cleared up a bit decided to do a coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee which took about 2 hours. It was well worth the trek as we got to go to the fish restaurant in Coogee again.
Thursday was spent on the beach again before heading into Sydney late afternoon for one final visit. Found the shopping area and managed to find an English shop which sold marmite (Becki was pretty ecstatic!). After a gin and tonic in one of the city bars where we were surrounded by people in suits (felt a tiny bit out of place in our flip flops) we headed down to the harbour front for dinner. Was amazing to watch the sun go down over the harbour whilst enjoying yummy pizza. Unfortunately we were fairly unsuccessful at taking any night view pics of the Opera House and Bridge, it seems you need a tripod as ours turned out really blurry. We were tempted to steal one off the Japenese tourists as they seemed to be whipping them out all over the place!
Today is our final day in Sydney so we will be spending some more time on the beach before sneaking back into the hostel for a shower and to join in their BBQ, despite checking out this morning. Catching the 9.45pm night bus up to Coffs Harbour where we are spending a couple of days.
Missing everyone lots, lots of love
Becki, Jen and Sam xx xx
