Hello everybody!
Since we last wrote we ate our cake and left Melbourne on the nightbus headed for Sydney. After a 12 and a half hour bus ride we arrived in Sydney slightly dazed and confused from sleep deprivation and attempted to make our way to our hostel for the night in the beach suburb of Coogee - which wasn't fun in rush hour with our massive backpacks! We had a bit of a frosty reception at the hostel and concluding that there wasn't much to be done in Coogee we booked ourselves in for the next night over in Bondi Beach. The one redeeming thing was that there was an amazing and cheap fish restaurant near the hostel which will definately be returning to next week!
Spent Wednesday on Coogee beach, however we were too scared to venture too far into the sea due to the prescence of some bluebottle jellyfish! - we don't know how poisonous they are but judging by what we've been told pretty much everything is deadly over here!! Thursday also involved working on our tans on Bondi beach where we we approached by some PR people claiming that a bar in Sydney centre would give us free meals and drinks that evening. Not one to turn such an offer down we headed into the city and found that this claim was indeed true - we had a rather nice meal of bangers and mash (Becki & Sam) and chicken schniztnel?! (Jen) and an hours worth of free 'champagne' which was only pallatable after adding copious amounts of raspberry cordial! It obviously did the trick because by the time the evening entertainment of breast painting (not in any way involving us!!) came on we found it all rather funny, if a little wrong!
After a bit of a lie-in on Friday morning we made our way into the city for a spot of sight-seeing. The Opera House and Sydney Bridge are amazing and much more impressive than in the photos and we chilled by the Opera House for a bit soaking up the atmosphere and taking in the Harbour views. The scale of the Harbour is also a lot bigger than expected; with all the skyscrapers around it was all a bit overwhelming and made us feel very small! After some lunch in St Martains Square we wandered around The Rocks which is an area of Sydney near the bridge which is one of the original parts of the city, so basically lots of old style building down winding little streets. The we went up Sydney Skytower which is the highest point in the city so we got some ariel views of the harbour and also got to experience 'Oz Trek' which was an extremely bizzarre ride involving a film about Australia and moving chairs! All very exciting.
Today we have been over to Manly beach which is on the other side of the Harbour and so we had to get a ferry across which meant good views of the Harbour. Beach was nice although weather was not the best - it actually rained and there were some clouds and we had to put jumpers on!!!! - does that make you all feel better! Being very economical and cooking our own dinner tonight, and tomorrow we are of to see the Blue Mountains which are about a 2 hour train journey from Sydney. We will let you know what we get up to soon.
Lots of love xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
