Today both Nicky and Paul were off at work, so we spent our last day in Aberfoyle very quietly at home, to catch our breath and sort ourselves out for the days to come. Doing the seemingly never-ending washing, transferring photos off of cameras, and Karen finished sewing up the little knitting projects for small members of this Scottish family, which had been keeping her fingers busy on all those long hours of driving. Then the short stroll down the street to post parcels off, hunt for some souvenirs and grocery shop as she was rostered on for cooking duty that evening.
The day passed pleasantly, although both Nick and Rosie were surprised to meet each other on the top landing, as neither one realised the other had been in their rooms all day, metres apart! Companionable teenagers - not!
Unable to drag the boys from their endless screen-time, Karen took off alone for one last walk in the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, and the panoramic views of the town. Nickys "impeccable sense of direction" is perhaps contagious, though, as for over half an hour she did an entire loopy walk up-over-down-and-around to the start again, when she actually intended to go right, up and around the hill to a vantage point on the edge of town! Mistake realised and correct path taken, she did achieve this in the end. AND managed uneventfully to find her way home again and cook tea in good time.
Paul did his Master Chef thing and finally made his long-promised and well-bragged-about Syrup Sponge. Leaving cooking instructions, he set off to collect Patrick for a quick visit. Unfortunately, his instructions were rubbish (or maybe his made up recipe was) and by the time this dessert was finally cooked, it was more like Toffee Cake! He blamed the replacement cook, obviously. She blamed the unfamiliar oven. Either way it tasted fine with lashings of thick cream and custard.
The rest of the evening was spent watching more episodes of amusing Russel Coight, and gathering our belongings for reluctantly departing from this lovely part of the country and these lovely people the next day.
