Sunday - sleep-ins and late breakfast were the order of the day. The family fry-up was well received. We were off back across to the west coast again, to Ullapool and a visit to Pauls best friend Gus and his family. The young ones in one car with Ben, and the oldies in the other, having a good old natter. We took the long way round on purpose, as the Cromalt Hills are truly amazing mountain peaks, even by Scottish standards, surrounding the road on each side, spikey rock tips pointing to the heavens. Or so they say - the mist and low cloud meant that we saw absolutely none of this! But it was a lovely drive all the same.
Welcomed by Gus and Rachel and their two children, we had a lovely lunch and were regaled with tales (some maybe even true) of the boys adventures. Then a walk around the town, and a quick drop into a bookshop (Karen restrained herself and purchased nothing! Although she did take note of titles for future reference.) Postcards in glorious colour showed us the awe-inspiring mountains we had yet to see.
The drizzling rain and misty skies continued all afternoon. Nick noticed a large sign on the foreshore, indicating significant geological formations across the Loch, which had great influence on the theory of plate tectonics in Victorian times. The sign suggested you look up and across Loch Broom to take notice of the change in rock types clearly visible in the hillside opposite. We tried, but the rocks in question were vanishing and then disappeared entirely in the mist. Oh well, the image on the sign was quite useful, really…
Hoping that travelling another road might mean the sky would clear and we could still catch a glimpse of those awesome peaks on our return journey, we drove down and away to take a circular route home. No luck, and the mountains are still a mystery we missed in the mists. Next time.
