Today's highlight for me was Ollantaytambo, an ancient Incan city that continues to be occupied. Narrow streets lined with buildings built on the Incan stone foundations. Canals about
8 inches wide carried water from the Urubamba River through the town. Semi tropical plants and cacti abounded. There were operating shops, homes, hostels, restaurants, and more. The home we visited had a herd (?) of about 40 cuy running around inside. A culinary specialty of Peru, these guinea pigs were pretty cute. Although it's hard to imagine eating one, I'll probably have a taste before we leave the country. Built into the surrounding mountainside were ruins of ancient terrace farmlands, granaries and the Temple of the Sun. This was a special place for the Incas, and it's discovery may have prevented the Spaniards from moving on and discovering Machu Piccu.
