The desert on the coast of Peru is totally barren except for the relatively small areas that have been irrigated to grow crops. Today we traveled to huge dunes in the desert for dune buggy rides. After instructions from the owner and assurances that the drivers were experienced and the rides were 100% safe, we put on goggles, climbed into the buggies, strapped ourselves in, and took off. We zipped up and down the dunes at a pretty fast speed, sometimes cresting a dune and tearing down the other side like a roller coaster ride. The drivers eventually stopped at the top of a huge dune, took sand boards from the tops of the buggies and waxed the bottom of each board. We sat on the boards, held on to a strap near the front of the board, and sped down the dune, kind of like sledding on snow. After walking back up the dune, some of us tried it again, lying on the boards on our stomachs. It was really fun!
