Hi all! We have just been to a beautiful place called Kuranda. We got there very early yesterday morning as we needed to get the cheap option there and 'Johns bus' only left at half 8 in the morning! We actually got there at 7.45!!! It was only $4 on the bus, so we were pleased at saving dollars! When we got there it seemed to be a sleepy town, as in the 1960's people moved there to escape everyday life and to start their own community. They had some really lovely markets - mostly hippy (Anita was in her element!).
We went to the hostel and it was in a time warp! It was an odd hostel with lots of rooms branching off in all directions! We just had a wander around the town and we had some lunch. We just chilled out in the afternoon as all the shops close there at 3.30pm! We then ventured out of the hostel later on for tea. We treated ourselves to an early easter meal and it was scrumptious.
This morning we went for a walk to the waterfall. We walked along the train track as it was the quickest way of getting there. When we were walking down the tracks we saw a train - we didn't think we would see one as they only come down the track a few times a day. While the train passed we waited on the side and waved at all the passengers. Once we got to the waterfall Anita, Rob and Naomi ventured further down the waterfall. I decided to sit and wait for them and James headed back into town. A little while later they emerged. I asked Anita how far down did they get and she replied half way down and then said 'Where's James?' - I said that he had gone back and asked why? She said that she had a leech on her foot and wanted the lighter out of his bag to try and burn it off! I couldn't believe how calm she was - I wasn't that calm at the thought of Anita having a leech on her foot. We were starting to walk back to the hostel - Anita with the leech on her foot still when we saw some other people. We asked them do they know how to get a leech off. The man said that salt works, luckily Rob had some salt in his wallet! I have no idea why and he said that he had it in his wallet for egg related emergencies!!! What??? I do not understand that boy!!!! Anyway, it worked and the leech dropped off her foot. Anita's foot bled a bit but it was fine and she put a plaster on her foot. She was so calm throughout the whole incident and I am very proud at her as I don't know what I would have done if that was me!
After the walk we had a wander around the town again and got some lunch before heading to get the scenic railway back. It was an old fashioned station and train, the scenery was beautiful.
Whilst I am on the internet Anita is reading her Thai phrase book, we are learning a few words everyday. We are now back in Cairns until Monday when we go to Cape Tribulation for the day. So all I have to say now is 'lah gorn' (goodbye in Thai)! x
P.S Happy Easter to you all!
P.P.S I am going to add some more photos at a later date as Naomi got a virus on her memory card from putting it into computers. So I am going to wait until I have burnt them all to CD, so I can then add them without worrying if my memory stick will get a virus!
