G'day all from Cairns. I have finally found an internet cafe which is not too expensive so will catch up now with my blog.
I think the last blog I posted was about Magentic Island, well from there we work up very early and headed to a place called Undara. Undara was in the middle of no where and we did not see many cars on our way there. When we got there Naomi, Rob and James went to see some caves which were formed with lava. Me and Anita didn't go and we parked the van up and had a wander. When we were parking up Anita had an incident with a tree. It always seems that they put us on the smallest plot when we have a large vehicle. It was a very tight corner and Anita was reversing the van back, we went back and forth a lot to try and avoid a tree but in the end she mowed it down! I was laughing a lot but Anita was very concerned that she had killed a tree in the outback. We had a wander around and between us we decided that later when the others get back we would have a camp fire and marshmallows, so we bought some firewood! Before we had our fire, Anita, Naomi, Rob and James went on a wildlife walk in the evening. I opted out of this as me and nature do not really mix well! They had a great time and saw lots of wildlife but they came back with a present for me. They had told the guide that they had left their friend in the van and on the way back he found a huge snake and put it in a bag and brought back to the van with them. I opened the door when they got back and the guide greeted me with a huge carpet snake. I screamed a lot and ran into the back of the van to hide. I was not expecting to see a huge snake and it frightened the life out of me. After the guide had gone the others wanted to see a wildlife presentation back at the center of the camp around a campfire. It took a lot of persuasion for me to leave the van after that as I was so concerned the snake was outside waiting for me. After the wildlife presentation we walked back to the van and I saw a couple of frogs and one was absolutely massive! If anyone knows I hate frogs and all the way back I had to hold onto Anita's bag. We got back and cooked tea and started the campfire. It was really smokey but we managed to cook our marshmallows.
I thought my encounters with wildlife was over in the morning but I was wrong. I scouted out the shower for frogs, lizards etc and appeared to be clear. So I went for my shower and the next thing I knew was that there was a frog in there with me! I panicked a lot and ran out of the shower still covered in shampoo and my towel. I ran out of the shower and outside was a kangaroo and her joey! I think I startled them! Lol! I ran back to the van and eventually calmed down. We then left Undara to travel to Cairns where we were taking the van back. I have to say the last night in the camper van was eventful and I quite glad that we are back in hostels now so I don't have to have any more encounters late at night with frogs, lizards, possums, bats and bush wallabies!
We are now in Cairns and we are leaving next Friday for Thailand. Next Monday we are heading to Cape Tribualtion which is north of Cairns where we are going to spend a few days and also go jungle surfing - which looks interesting! On Thursday we are hoping to go to Karunda for the night. We are going to get a train there and the the sky rail back - so looking forward to that. In between I am not up to much as my funds for Australia are pretty much depleted! So I think the lagoon in Cairns is going to be my home for my remaining time here. At the moment the temperature is 35 degrees so its absolutely roasting!
Hopefully I will be able to add some photos to my blog. I have been able to add them onto facebook - if anyone is on facebook they can have a look at those.
I think thats pretty much all for my trip here in Australia! As I haven't been able to get on the internet but its not very detailed but I think you all get the idea of my time here in Oz! x
