We arrived in Melaka by our most luxurious bus yet, we had two big reclining armchair seats with foot rests! Found ourselves a guest house in china town, and went for an explore around the lanes that were full of antique and trinket shops, temples and restaurants.
Melaka is famous for its trishaws (bicycle and side carriage) that they decorate elaborately with plastic flowers, baby doll heads, tinsel, lights and a sound system and take you on a tour. Ours could have been an interesting tour but couldn't understand a single word our guide said! And all he wanted to do was take photos of us.
The following day we hired out some bikes and went on our own tour, we cycled along the river where there was some really nice graffiti art, the cycling soon got too sweaty so we stopped at a bar where d*** was very excited to find Kilkenny on tap, first non lager drink in 4 months! That night we went for probably one of the best Indians we have ever had, they had clay ovens on the street for cooking the tandoori chicken and naan breads and the place was packed out, the best thing was that it cost less than £5 for the both of us!
We took two more coaches to reach the cameron highlands, a large area in the mountains famous for growing tea. The day after we arrived we went on a tour to visit the tea plantations and factory, went for a jungle trek to find Rafflesia, the worlds largest flower and finished the day with a visit to a strawberry farm and a butterfly farm where all the other insects and snakes were much more interesting! Richard held a scorpion and lots of other creepy crawlies.
Every night there was street food stalls that we sampled. Our favourite was probably an Indian style pancake stuffed with beef, curry & egg to set. Sounds strange but was delicious!
Moving on by bus again we arrived in Ipoh. Found ourselves a classy hotel equipped with fridge and television! We went out for some boiled chicken, rice and bean sprouts, a local speciality, it was great. We had a night in catching up on the Olympics. The following day we explored the city, soon realising there was very little to do, however we did discover an english bar! As it was raining and pouring outside we thought time would be best spent drinking a tower of tiger, Followed by a very cultural pizza hut takeaway!
We had one day to spare before we were allowed into Thailand due to visas, and decided to spend it at a jungle waterpark. It was great fun, there were natural hot springs, rapids, slides, a sandy beach, a petting zoo & tigers!
We were on the streets that night until midnight as this is when our train left for Thailand.
