It's time to go and explore Wellington! It's 9.20am, and we were excited and ready to see what New Zealand's Capital has to offer! Oh, but nothing's open?! We woke up early for nothing? It's not Sunday is it? But no, even on a Thursday, nothing opens here until 10am, or later! It's the city that DOES sleep!
So we wondered around for a while, looking at the cool and crafty designs of the walkways and sculptures. When 10am finally came around, we headed into the Gallery. The first thing we do is go into this room that looked like it had jumping castles in it. This caught our attention, and the lady in there asked if we wanted a go. What a question! We had to take our shoes and coats off, then we walked up this thing, and were told to turn around, and fall back into it.. So we did! And it ate us! We fell into this room type thing in the back and had to crawl out again. It was fun! I did it a few times.
After that was done, we walked out and saw a bunch of primary school kids walk in. Our mission was to avoid them at all costs! We walked around and looked at usual gallery, arty stuff and went upstairs. There was this room that was dark, and had feather looking and icicle looking things attached to the roof, it looked simply beautiful! We went in and the and the lady supervising it, told us that some of the feather things had strings hanging down, and if we ran our hands down it, they would make a soft noise, and move with the vibration of our hands! It was possibly the coolest things I have even seen! It was stunning!
By then, there was one room left to see, and that was the room with all the school kids. We bite the bullet and went in. In there were these vases and pots and such, which had very explicit words on them.. Not very appropriate for primary school kids!
We left the gallery and walked around the streets, trying to find our beloved Gloria Jeans. We found one, and it was advertising pumpkin soup, so Kristy got some for lunch while I got a salami melt. We also got our favourite Choc Macadamia Latte! It was so amazing. While we were eating lunch, Emily saw us sitting in there and came in to join us. After lunch we all headed towards the cable car to catch one to the botanical gardens. It was very nice there! We walked around for what seemed like ages, but when we looked at the map, we have done barely anything!
After a few hours of looking at trees, bushes, roses, waterfalls and walking steep, steep hills, we headed back down to the city. We were getting quite tired from walking around all day, but that didn't stop us from going to the museum on the way back! It was probably the best museum I've ever been too. Everything is interactive instead of just looking at stuff behind a glass.
And this is where I experienced my first earthquake.
It was in a simulated house at the museum! Also, did you know New Zealand has over 15 000 earthquakes a year!? Suddenly, Australia is seeming like a far better place to be right now! We continued though the museum and soon we were too tired to continue. It was then we discovered we were only on the second floor! Out of eight! That was insane, this museum was massive! We decided we will come back to Wellington and visit it again.
The trudge back home was tiring, and we stopped in and got some stuff from the store cause we were going to have steak sandwiches for dinner! That was pretty exciting. When we got home, we cooked pretty much straight away so we could have an early night, but also because we didn't want to use the kitchen when it was full of backpackers!
Dinner was amazing, and it was probably better than what you had! We had thick steak, onion, tomato, cheese, sauce and bacon toasted sandwiches and chips! Best. Meal. Ever. On this trip so far anyway.
So Wellington, we really enjoyed. There are HEAPS of jobs here, so if we don't get a job in snowy Queenstown, we will most likely head back here. Which I wouldn't mind, it's a wonderful city!
