Well, I woke up the morning of my birthday, docked on the island of crete. Crete, the island that hates 17's. I'll come back to that.
Crete is the largest island in Greece and is south of athens. I actually didn't get a great impression from the port town of Heraklion. It wasn't nearly as quaint or traditional as the other island towns we have been to so far. It kinda just looked like a big city. Soo we decided to be adventurous once more and find the bus station to get tickets to Knossos, which is a well known excavation site of a palace. We got to Knossos a little early though, so we walked a bit through the cretean countryside. The interior is much nicer then Heraklion, which leads me to believe that the rest of the island has potential. The palace was beautiful as expected, and there are still restoration efforts taking place.
We bussed back, and got off in the centre of town. That was when we got the idea that I needed to get a picture of me with something that said '17'. Believe me, easier said then done. We where walking along a shopping street, following the addresses. 11.. 13.. 15..... 19. No joke. So we shrugged that one off, and tried the next street. It happened to us three more times. I mean seriously what is so bad about the number 17? I think it's a wonderful number. Hey, it's even the age where you get to use magic outside of hogwarts. I think that's pretty special.
Not according to Crete though, and alas my hopes were crushed. We went and bought a Greek doughnut instead. It was bigger then a hockey puck and filled with melted chocolate. Yeah, be jealous.
Overall, I won't be quick to return to Crete. Though it has it's charm, it's nothing compared to what we have seen so far. Oh, and it also hates my birthday.
The search for 17 continues.
