When I was younger, I always wondered why people would go somewhere named after a thanksgiving bird. And now I know why: it is just amazing. Turkey is a very special place; you don't have to go far to come across a marble pillar in the middle of a field, or a crumbled castle on a hill top. It's history is so rich, and we are just only pulling out of the port and I'm already thinking of when I will go back.
We where up bright an early this morning. Well.. Less bright then early.. The sun wasn't even yet up when we woke.. Which was just before 6. Early mornings are just the greatest! (sarcasm). But it was worth it.
Our port this morning was kusadasi, a harbour town better known for the nearby ephesus ruins. We opted not to join all the tour groups that most of the people on our ship joined; instead we got a taxi and driver for the morning. It was a short drive to the ruins, and our driver gave us background information on the way.
Ephesus is an incredible site. It was a huge port town 3000 years ago before the ocean receded to the shores of kusadasi. It's different from other sites because you actually get to walk on and through the ruins. It was strange to think you where walking up a stadium that people built and used so many years ago. You could walk down the roads they built, and see what was once a major city. Like mykonos, there was a cat infestation. Not saying it like its a bad thing. We spent a good hour there, and I'm so glad we went.
Our driver then drove us around his town, the modern day Ephesus. We went through the small old streets and drove by some churches and an ancient castle. When we got back to kusadasi we shopped some more. I discovered I'm a champion haggler; my mom ended up getting me to do her haggling for her. I basically just kissed up big time, and they always caved. So therefor we bought loads, and we aren't even halfway through our cruise yet. It was such a different lifestyle there, all the husslers and such.
We are now en route to patmos for our second stop of the day.
