So here are some final thoughts on Greece:
Favorite island: rhodes. There is just so much stuff you can do there. And it's big; you can stay in old rhodes town, lindos, or in a beach resort. It's just so welcoming and charming there.
Best scenery: santorini. You would be crazy to say otherwise.
Least welcoming island: Crete. Not a fan.
Best activity: donkey riding. You just can't not do it.
Hardest thing to adjust to: not being able to throw toilet paper in the toilet. It took a few times to remember.
Best walk: walk down from St. Johns monastery in Patmos, and the walk down from the acropolis of lindos.
Best historic building: acropolis of Athens, no competition.
Nicest people: workers on our cruiseship. They were so great. Our housekeeper gave me a big hug and balloons on my birthday. Then he gave my mom a hug too for giving birth to me. Also the waiter in santorini; most welcoming guy ever!
Interesting place to revisit: turkey. It's an amazing place.
Coolest thing: being the first cruiseship to dock at each port for the new year. The locals were all so happy and welcoming!
Biggest disappointment: not getting to see mykonos in sunlight, and not getting a full day on santorini.
Biggest surprise: the amazing weather!
Best things eaten: mom: cheese pie on santorini, stuffed baked feta in lindos. Both: greek doughnuts. Me: dessert given out on Patmos when we disembarked the ship (i don't know what it was, but it was fantastic.), Greek omelette on lindos, cannelloni at captains dinner on ship.
Biggest surprise: almost getting pick pocketed.
Best decision: not joining tour groups/taking public transit.
Biggest regrets: not having a big enough stomach to try all the Greek desserts before our week is up. Also not having a bigger bag to load all our purchases in. Mines bursting, and I haven't even gotten to Italy yet.
Biggest rip off: taxi from airport to hotel. We got major ripped off. By a good amount.
Most disgusting thing: amount of food people loaded onto their plates at the cruises buffet. Simply nauseating.
Strangest thing: men just hanging out everywhere. It was most prominent in turkey, but it happened everywhere. They didn't do anything, they just sat there.
Biggest annoyance: tacky tourists. The loud voiced woman in the room beside us. The Asian couple with a new matching shirt for each day.
Best purchases: me: wool sweater from Athens, leather purse from turkey. Mom: sweater from Rhodes.
Best ruins of a city to explore: ephesus. There where no boundaries. You could walk all over and through the ruins. It was so hands-on.
Best neighborhood in Athens: plaka. So quaint.
Strangest customs: the swinging beads. Greek men get these beads on string and swing them on their fingers when they are bored. It's super random.
Feelings of Athens: upbeat and welcoming.
Athens infestations: dogs: they are chilling everywhere.. caterpillars: Random but true.. And pigeons for sure.
Islands' infestations: cats. everywhere.
Saddest thing: the nomads of Athens. There are these gypsy families that send their little kids out to sell things or play instruments for money. One boy looked about 4 and he could barely hold his accordion.
Most popular mode of transport: motorcycle. They are everywhere.
