- Day 7..
- So today we got stuck in the lab to analyse all the fish and organisms that we collected the day before, I ended up looking into more about this small hermit crab which was in an odd way quite cute, it at one point climbed out of its little petri dish and trundled off across the table, others and i found this quite amusing as you can imagin. Then while i was looking for an informative book to get some info out of, my little hermit actually tried to commit suicide by climbing yet again out of a petri dish (It was in a bigger one at this point) and scampered off down the work top and off the edge....it chipped its shell and was then extremely frustrating as i went to get a book to ID it actual species and genus name, and it proceeded not to come out of its shell for the rest of the time we were in the lab...
So i went onto my otoliths which are ear stones (you age fish by them) which i had dissected out of a Spot fish, and i couldn't possitively "read" the stone correctly as it was quite indistinguishable so i dyed it in a red liquid to hopefully add enhancement to the rings inside it.
We were then told that we were going to go out on the boat again - with a promise of getting to go swimming! So we went around the north of the salt marsh and trawled about 4 times, each time something going wrong: the net twisted, the cod end not sealed up, getting tangled up..and so on, i deemed it fate that we should have just been swimming ALL the time instead. The we went onto a mud marsh and siene netted for hours and digged up worms and felt for clams with our feet - a lot easier than you might imagin! Ian actually found his first clam for once! He was very chuffed and wouldnt stop telling people that his was actually the best size because Mark said it was...it was a giggle moment! I proceeded to hunt for my Goby's. I am doing a project on them and i need to collect a few of the species called a naked Goby for it. But after collecting about 6-8 of them i was being savagely attacked by the Green Heads and i gave up. We ended up going swimming but just off the mud flat where there is stingrays and crabs...i didnt go. That and it was muddy and cold, and i wanted tea.
But anyway when we got back we ended up having some tea, then we went back into the lab to analyse the organisms that we had caught before tea, which was very interesting...and we didntend up leaving the lab til around 10.30.
After this its a bit of a blur, i think i just went straight to bed and crashed out but if i get some other info to contradict this ill update this.
