Second day in Hanoi. we arrived by plane on Friday night from Vientiane having decided that an hour in the air was a better option than the 24 hour coach jorney. We already had some experience with busses on Loas road and couldn't bare the thought. One of the couples we met on the slow boat down the Mekong arrive on the bus tonight so no doubt we will find out if we made the right choice.
Me and Alice met up with Dave Harwood (a mutual friend from Petersfield) last night and we went for a few drinks. He showed us how the locals enjoy a beer Hoi, which is a localy brewed beer (around 3%) that costs 5,000 dong - about 8p for a half pint!! Quite easy to drink also hence we enjoyed a few...
After a late start today we got thouroughly lost in the old quarter but found a massive bronze Lennin Statue and a museum that was closed. After this we emersed ourselfs in local culture and had tappas at a place owned by a Spanish guy. This was not entirely on purpose as lots of shops and resurants are closed due to the Luna New Year tomorrow. Most of the country takes the week of work and travels away from the city.
The weather today has been the coldest we've had so far at 15 degrees but its quite nice being able to explore without stopping every few minutes for shade/water. We struggled to do Vientiane justice in the scorching heat.
We plan to go out agian tonight and meet with dave again to disscuss the possibility of going to Mai Chaum, a village 100 or so km to the south west of Hanoi. No doubt we shall enjoy a few more local brews....
