We planned to visit Mui Ne in order to break up the journey down to Saigon (HCMC). Being (apparently) only four and a half hours away from Nha Trang, it seemed like the perfect costal stop over. The bus infact, took close to eight hours to get us to our destination, and when we got off we struggled to orientate ourselves, having done no prior research on the place. As we later found out, Mui Ne itself is a fishing town 4km up the coast from where we were dropped - on the 8km stretch of ocean road that resort of Mui Ne is set around. This suited us fine as accomodation was our goal and fishing was not.
In the mid day sun and edgy from the ride, we settled for the first place we found. We have got into a habit of doing this now, as often we laugh at the first price, walk around for two hours trying, in vain, to beat that price only to end up in a worse location, spending more and not talking to each other. It happend to be reasonable, by the sea and had a pool so we were lucky this time.
Having been on the move for some time, we felt we owed ourselfs some respite so we spent that first day, most of the second and the morning of the third by the pool - drink in hand. You can appreciate that this was purely medicinal, I doubt now if we could have continued had we not taken that rest.
Dispite the boozing and lounging, we took some time out to visit the vast sand dunes that suround the area. The mountains of sand streatch for miles along the coast and from the shore, the horizon is peppered with their peaks. We first visited the white sand dunes 20 or so kilometers out of town, where it is possible to rent quad bikes and sand boards to drift down the dunes. We shunned the quad bikes sadly in favour of sledging which turned out to be a waste of time - I tried the sand board and promptly snapped it, I failed to recognise the differences between sand and snow at my cost. Covered in white sand, we made or way to the red sand dunes to get another fine coating to match and watched as the sun set over the flowing sand.
We have gorged ourselves on sun and sand, i'll be honest, we've had enough - Off to Saigon....
