As Singapore was a bit of a transit stop, we had set aside four days to explore with little idea of what to do and unsure of it's status as a country/city/independent Malaysian state. Luckily, we met a couple in Vietnam who live in the city and offered to show us the ropes. Our arrival and transfer to the city centre was unusually simple; us being used to wandering around like heedless chickens, we were surprised to find ourselves checked into our Little India home stay within the hour. After demolishing a curry we headed to meet our would be guides in the business district (also night life centre) to start our tour. After locating our friends (somewhat problematic having only met once previously when drunk) we sat, beer in hand, and were pointed out the sights and landmarks from our riverside vantage point. Satisfied our tour was complete; we concentrated on drinking and catching up until time totally got away from us and the bar started closing. On examining my new watch, I was surprised to learn it was only twelve and was keen to continue the party despite our guides insistence that all the places remaining open were not the sort of place you'd like to be seen entering. Admitting defeat, we hailed a taxi and headed home where we found it was four AM. My watch still says twelve - Never buy a watch in Bali.
Due to the antics of the night before; the next day was a wright off, we did however manage to drag ourselves to a nearby food court late afternoon, and had an evening at Singapore night safari (too late for the normal Zoo), where you can see the zoo's nocturnal animals doing there thing. On our last full day, we visited the Singaporean island of Sentosa; a partly man-made island (also the most southerly point of continental Asia) that boasts a verity of theme-park like attractions including a universal studio's and a 40 foot Merlion (half lion, half fish. No idea why but quite a spectacle). In the evening we met back up with our chums Andy and Faye at The Raffles Hotel; famous for the invention of the Singapore sling, and casually enjoyed the cocktail in the plush surroundings then nearly vomited when the bill came. We finished the night off enjoying chilli crab at the riverside gluttons hawker, then waddled back to little India ready for our flight the next day.
Teary eyed, we bid farewell to South East Asia and readied ourselves for the new challenges of Australia...
