Well, today was a fabulous day and we got to do all of the things I had planned. First, we took the Metro from Les Corts stop by our apartment to Placa De Catalunya and headed down the most famous street in Spain - Las Rambla - which runs from Catalunya to the Barcelonetta (the port area on the Mediterranean Sea). It is full of arts and crafts, street performers, hawkers, restaurants, bars and tourists - just my kind of crowd.
About a 1/4 of the way down, we turned off and headed for the Barcelona Cathedral. It was just breathtaking and fortunately, we timed it just right to catch the last 1/2 of the Sunday Mass. Rayne was thrilled. We then toured the city museum and explored the underground remains of the original Roman city of Barcino - circa 3rd century A.D. It was very cool and contained the ruins of a laundry, textile mill, winery and the 1st Catholic Church in Barcelona. Next we resumed the Las Ramblas walk and ended at the Christopher Columbus Memorial. Even though Columbus sailed across the Atlantic, which lies 180 degrees west of Barcelona, they have erected this massive statue of the "Slaughterer of the Americas" and he is proudly pointing East across the Mediterranean. Go figure!!!
We then went up Monjuic and explored the Castel that defended the town from Muslim pirates and Turkish warships back in the good old days of the 15th and 16th century. Afterwards, we allowed Rayne to drag us through the Pablo Picasso Museum, 'cause if mama's happy, everybody's happy!
By this time, we were all pretty tired and very hungry. We had eaten lunch in a cool little Pub just off Cathedral Square around 1pm, but it was now almost 8:30pm, so we headed out to the MareMangum Entertainment Complex that sits out in the Mediterranean at the end of the Marina. Once there, we ate Paella and pizza and pasta chased down with cold Spanish beer and lots of Fresh-made Sangria
To top off the evening, on the way home to our apartment - which is only 1 1/2 blocks from the home of the Barcelona FC soccer team - we ran smack into the crowd of fans exiting the stadium after Barcelona had clinched the La Lliga Championship. I don't know much about soccer, but they tell me its the equivelent of winning our Super Bowl, so lets just they were a fairly rowdy mass of humanity we had to pass through on the way home. Congrats, Lages, on your team's huge victory.
Tomorrow, we say Hasta Luego to Barcelona and Hola to Madrid!!!
