Today we took another day trip - this time to Segovia - and all I can say is WOW!!! From the Roman Aqueduct to the Alcazar (palace/fortress) to the Huge Cathedral, Segovia is wonderous and awe inspiring.
We reached Segovia by High-speed train from Madrid around 3pm and walked around the medieval, cobblestoned streets that are a maze with cool views awaiting around every turn. We lunched at a little open-aired cafe and explored every inch of the city in the 5 hours we were there.
The 2,000 year old aqueduct is still an engineering marvel and is quite impressive, but the Cathedral and Alcazar are just something else to behold. They are so immense they make you feel insignificant - which in reality we are. The interior of the Cathedral is stunning and contains over 25 seperate side chapels with full altars and is full of some of the most beautiful paintings I have seen. The Alcazar towers above the entire town, both literally and figuratively. Once atop John's Tower, you have a complete 360 degree vantage point of the town and surrounding hills. The view is simply stunning. The fortress/palace itself is quite impressive in its own right and rivals any of the many palaces we have seen over the years. It is no surprise that the Kings & Queens of Castille called Segovia home for so many years. In fact, Isabella was crowned Queen of Castille here in 1474.
It is no wonder Segovia has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and, although I'm sure Toledo would have held its own, I am very glad I made this itinerary change at the last moment!!
