Another Getaway Day. This time from Madrid to Cordoba. We had a relaxing breakfast at a little neighborhood cafe, then made it to the train station with plenty of time to spare for our 12:30pm shuttle to Cordoba. Upon our arrival at our hotel in Cordoba - La Hospederia El Churrasco - we could not have been more pleased or impressed. This was a small boutique hotel nestled in the heart of the historic district and received high praise on several travel sites, but you just never know for sure. Well, this well exceeded our expectations. The rooms were lavishly decorated and Rayne and I had a private balcony overlooking a small courtyard. The service was impeccable, up to and including them storing our bags for 6 hrs. after we checked out the next day while we finished touring the city.
The historic center itself was incredible. The La Mesquita (Mosque/Cathedral) was even more beautiful then the many pictures and descriptions I have seen. It is so immense and so diverse in its architecture and interior design!! At night, we crossed the Guadalquivir River over the old Roman Bridge and looked back to see the huge Cathedral all alight in its splendor. It was quite a view!! We toured the inner city via horse-drawn carriage and were treated to gorgeous views of personal patios lush with flora and painted tiles and other decorative touches. I only scheduled 1 day/night in Cordoba, but now I kinda wished I had stretched it to at least 2. If we ever return, I know exactly where I'll be staying.
