Today was Getaway Day in Barcelona, but I had saved the best for last. Sagrada Familia Church! Antoni Gaudi's as yet unfinished (construction began in 1882!!) monument to the Holy Family is a vast and ornately designed tribute to "Modernisme". And let me just say, OH, MY GOD!!! I cannot even begin to describe the enormity of this thing or the wide array of symbolism, stories and biblical history detailed throughout the main facades and other exteriors of this temple. I have included several photos, but this is just one of those places you need to see in person to capture the scope and grandeur and totality of this masterpiece of architecture. It has been under construction for over 100 years and is still not scheduled for completion until 2026 and there are currently over 300 workers on the site. When done, I would have to rank this as one of the 7 wonders of the modern world.
Following Sagrada Familia would be impossible, so we decidied to leave Barcelona by High speed train (AVE) and head to Madrid. Our apartment here is truly awesome. It is situated on a quite old residential street only 2 blocks off the main thoroughfare (Gran Via) and has floor to ceiling interior window shutters and wood floors and tons of character. They don't build 'em like this anymore!!
We got in late, so basically we just ate and did a little evening stroll around the Old Town - including Plaza Mayor and Puerto Del Sol. The nightlife was in full swing and the whole place was lit up like christmas. Tomorrow is Muesum day, with scheduled vists to the Prado, Reina-Sofia and Thyssen galleries. Goya, Velazquez and El Greco, OLE!!
