For our first full day in Spain we travelled north via Train and Funicular to the mountain monestary of Montserrat. This incredible edifice is situated in the Serrated Mountains, which resemble the edge of a huge, jagged knife jutting up from the earth. It is easy to see how the monestary got its name - Montserrat literally translates as "serrated mountain".
The monestary and environs are breathtaking. From the gorgeous views of the mountains and the valley below, to the stunning Basilica, this 1,000 year old sanctuary was everything it promised to be - and more. Words fail to capture the scope of this place, so the photos I have attached will have to suffice.
After returning to Barcelona in the early evening, we headed back down to Placa De Espanya to watch the Font Magica show. This elaborately choreographed water and light show includes huge fountains stretching from the front of the Museum of Catalonian Art all the way down the Avignuda De La Reina Cristina to Placa De Espanya. There was a very large and lively crowd for the show and we walked all around enjoying the music and the colorful water dance.
By then it was about 10pm and we were pretty pooped. We headed back to the apartment, with a brief stop at a local bodega for some pre-bedtime snacks. Yummy!! It was a great family day and we all had a blast. Tomorrow, we head out for a full day of Barcelona sightseeing, which will include Castel Monjuic, The Cathedral and Picasso Museum.
