Mt Olympis, my kewi day.
So woke up on my day off debated getting up to see what the wether was like , to go riding maybe... to get a phone call from my buddy. Excitidly i gathered from his call, quick olympis just got 70cms of snow, the road is open, were going in 20 minutes.
And that was where this day begun. THinking to myself, great i get to ski another feild i got all my gear ready, and hopped into the car. Torrey is giddy like a 4 year old up frount and turns round and tells me that this is as kewi as it will get... At this point i am nervous .. what on earth does that mean.. does that mean i should be happy or sad or scared !
We rocked up at 4square for "kewi breakfast" i was handed a pie and a pizza bread.. nothing too extrodonary i feel. . . then after we got on the road we took and unexpected turn off up a dirt road. Again kinda gotten used to that. Now we arrive an hour or so later at the sign and chain up for Mt Olympis. The road looks no worse than mt hutt.. .well so you think. Chains on all wheels, .. an unsual chain call i thought ... esp as we were in a 4x4 .. anyhow chains on we started plowing up this road.
Torrey then whaps the camera out, still unsure as to why this is soooo kewi i take a final glance out the window to reasure myself and their it hit me. . . the gnarlest acsess road i have ever seen . i mean ever. combined with the narrowness, lack of barriers, snow, steepness and everything this was going to be terrifying.
We have a video that i will upload and i cannot do justise to how gnarly this road was ...
Once we got to the car park .. got geared up .. it dawn on me that there was only rope tows. Rope tows get pritty dam sore after about 100 m... so how on earth were we going to get up and down cause i was not keen on walking.
We go into this little hut that felt like it was full of locals and grab a belt with a metal contraption attached. . . the nut cracker
I had heard so so much about this contraption... but here it was in flesh.. brutally painfull looking. So after a skiier and boarder both tried to give me help and advice on using such a devide i decided to adopt my own technique... hope.
once you had made it up the first lift... then you got a lift ticket. survivalof the fitest.. We walked into the hutt (my like my old club hutt back in SSC) where all the NZ lot knew everyone. and they ALL knew it was my first time haha
Anyway, awesome days skiing, despite getting smashed in the face by a nut cracker and falling off and face planting many times. It was home time. Now .. it had been snowing all day.. so the road .. was somewhat worse than when we arrived, infact they had shut the road whilst we were up skiing ..
So .. being a classic brit i start to rattle of all the questions.. the Kewis im with were pritty chilled stating that its a common thing and they hav beds up top if need be.. I MEAN WHAT . i do not wanna be stuck on a mountain i thought to myself! ! !
SO an hour and a half later as its abotu to get dark, they send a digger down the road.. the digger gets stuck.. were stuck behind the digger. (video evidence to follow)
we do however finaly get down... and i am now happy to be alive and say i had a real "kewi experience" ....
