We thought that Phuket had been a tropical paradise. We were wrong. The last 3 nights we have been staying on the island of Ko Lanta. It is an amazing place as you will see from the photos when we find a computer that works quicker than I type!! On wednesday we left Phuket early on, and got the boat to Ko Phi Phi. The boat did a tour of the island, showing us the fantastic limestone outcrops and "the beach". After spending all of 10 seconds on the island we got straight on to a boat for Ko Lanta. The island itself was quiet, but we found several top people at our bungalows; playing Thai card games, relaxing on the beach, playing football at sunset and going to beach parties. Last night we got in at 3 (before getting up at 7 to come to Krabi) from a beach party nearby - which is why it probably comes across that I am struggling to string any kind of sentence together now!! The bar we were in last night was mad. If hollywood were going to set up a beach bar for a film then thats how it would be. A Thai reggae band was playing classic Bob Marley, while we sat with our drinks in tree houses and boats made from bamboo.
The night before Luis, who works at our bungalows, took a group of us down to the last nights celebrations of a Thai festival. Not the infamous vegetarian festival of which we have seen absolutely no sign! There was a famous Thai pop star singing, accompanied by dancing girls in wellies! I also managed to win a big pink fluffy rhino on a stall - which Luis's wife later commandeered!! The next night Luis also performed a traditional thai fire show for us on the beach. It was amazing and I dont think the photos do it justice.
That's about as much as I can manage now. Going to have a lie down and catch up on some sleep.............it's a hard life at the moment!!
A couple of things we missed out due to sleep deprivation: on our first morning on lante we were sat on the beach soaking up the sun when a boat moored up next to us. It was like a tardis; out of the boat poured about 20 people, the last 4 of which were carrying a dead body wrapped in a rug!! Which was nice! That afternoon we decided to get out for a while so took a stroll up the road and down on to the next beach. Little did we realise that the stroll back along the beach would turn in to a long-winded scramble over seemingly endless rocks! We did discover a couple of very attractive little coves during this, although the thunderstorm going on at the time did spoil things slightly! Campbell also attracted 2 stray dogs which followed him for the length of the beach - I would guess it was something to do with the smell of his feet!
