Hey up folks am on a mini adventure on a HelpX, so basically I stay with a local family do some chores for them and in return I get fed and a roof over my head. Am currently staying with Frauke and Donald and their little guy called Lenny. Its a german/canadian household and they are truly nice people. Totally relaxed but love the outdoors which is cool as I enjoy outdoor explorations too. In fact have walked 7.2 km today against a head wind was thirsty work!
Anyway I arrived here on Saturday and went to the local Xmas parade, by heck it was corny but was all in good spirits, Santa arrived by speedboat to the beach which I thought was a tad cool! The beach is about 15km in length and is just like FreshWater west surrounded by dunes in places. There is also a mighty pier that juts out into the sea, lovely however it it a little wobbly at the end as I found out.
There is a cool library near by, and the views of the beach are epic. Its funny though as I'm on a sort of spit, on the other side of the road is the estuary, bird watching a plenty I might add. Really good little track for cycling even if there is a rogue tree in the middle of the path, as it goes around the tree. (Will put photos up in the next week or so) Really peaceful though and again, good scenic views. Really good place to read a book and have a picnic I think, or just watch the day go by.
Yesterday went to a locals abode on a pre xmas gathering, was really cool to meet some more kiwi's, a few are adoptd kiwi's in that they have settled here from Germany, UK, America and even Ireland. They were a bunch of really cool people, properly chilled out which was nice. Went for another little cycle just to explore see the sights there is a really cool headland around here, good views hope to take more pictures of that! I then followed with a brief dip in the local waters, check out the local break etc. Was not disappointed, it was relatively small but a little more power than Wales, plus I didn't find the water all too cold. Was good to get out in the sea, get some saltyness going on, then back to the HelpX abode it was and be attacked by the little man Lenny! He is an absolute star, plenty of laughter provided by that one. They are really cool peeps, glad to have had the opportunity to stay with them actually. They aren't slave drivers either so its a win win here!
What this week has in store is anyones guess, bit of cycling, bit of working, bit of surfing, the day is my oyster! Haha. Think there might even be some tramping going on soon, thats hiking/trekking in case the lingo is a little hard to decifer!
The weather is nice here, sunny sunny sunny, but being by the coast the wind is a little nippy in the evening, you feel it when you walk home carrying your board.
But well will update again soon. Happy days :)
