hello all, it's our last day in australia today, hard to belive it's gone so fast. i feel the need to do a quick summary of our time here
number of kangaroos seen in the wild: 1 - dead by the side of the road number of koalas seen in the wild: 0 number of cuddly toys of australian wild animals bought: 3 all by alex number of times swam in aussie sea: 1 (2 for alex) number of times eaten kangaroo or similar: 0 but still one dinner left...
So wednesday we had a day exploring the delights of cairns, these a relatively few in number, the lagoon is nice but it was too cloudy to go to however we did do some useful shopping (books and cuddly koalas).
thursday we took a trip out to the great barrier reef, we went to oyster reef on a big catamaran and went snorkelling which was cool cos there were lots of fishies and good views of the reef but it was really choppy and we kept getting water splashing into our snorkels. also i know they're not designed for fashion purposes but wetsuits are like the least flattering thing ever. then went to upolo cay after our smorgasboard lunch (anyone who feels like explaining what smorgasboard means?). upolo cay was pretty - just a little spit of sand. i snorkelled again and zoe went on the glass-bottom boat tour. it was really nice though a little cloudy and windy - boo!
Today we went skydiving. it was like the best thing ever. i was fine on the way there in the van then as we got closer to doing it and hooked up in our harnesses i was really, really nervous, zoe was fine though, she was really calm in the plane where i was petrified. Getting out though all my fear just disappeared, you get out so quickly before i'd even realised it we were in freefall and it was so cool, it wasn't at all scary and our stomachs didn't go flip and there was a rainbow and then there was a cloud full of ice particles which kind of hurt and then before you know it the parachute's out and man that hurts (i have bruises on my legs from it). After that we floated down twisting and turning to get us to the right place and its so weird cos trees look really tiny one second and then the next youre back down on the ground, by the time i'd realised that zoe was down as well. it was so much fun we were both so happy. The dvd and pics - zoe's are up and i'll try and add mine in a bit - are so funny, i didn't even think about it at the time but absolutely everything is wobbling and flapping in the wind!
After that we headed back - treated ourselves to a slap-up lunch (thats such an odd phrase) and chilled out for the afternoon, getting ready for our flight tomorrow to singapore where we meet lucy. So our australian leg of the trip is over, it's been so cool, could have done with being a bit warmer but c'est la vie and i don't really think any of you in england will thank us for complaing about the weather! Really excited about the next bit of our trip - just 4 weeks left!
xxx alex and zoe
