We travelled from Oahu to Maui on the smallest plane we've ever travelled on, it was so funny, there was only 1 air steward! The ride wasn't so bad apart from the landing which was pretty scary, the plane seemed to be going all over the place and we bounced a bit on the runway when we landed, a bit of an experience!Maui is very different to Oahu, it is a lot more natural and has huge expensive resorts all over. Because of this our hostel wasn't located in one of the prettier places and there was nothing to do around the area but thankfully they had free trips every day which took us around the island. Here are some of the things we got up to: On our first trip we went to Makena beach. Makena beach is seperated in two by a huge old lava flow which is pretty cool and the beaches are aptly named big beach and little beach. Little beach has a bit of a twist though, it is a clothing optional beach, however most people take this opportunity to get totally naked! Phil and I walked across the lava flow to little beach, we were told to check it out because the beach is beautiful. When we arrived there is was quite funny, we both just kind of stood there staring at everyone!! It was just how you would imagine, there were naked people everywhere, we quickly left and returned to big beach!! There was good snorkelling here too and we were so excited because we saw a turtle, definatley the coolest thing I've ever seen when snorkelling, it was great. After the beach we went to a place called Kihei which was a nice little town, we had a few hours here to wander around. Phil and I ended up watching a Little League baseball game, it was so much fun, all the parents were there cheering them on! We watched sunset here too sat by the sea and turtles kept popping their heads out of the water, it was amazing. On the next trip we hiked through a rainforest and kept stopping off at waterfalls with swimming holes. The waterfalls weren't too impressive but only because there wasn't too much water running through but they each had a water hole where we could swim which was nice. In two of the spots they also had rope swings which we had a few goes on, that was fun! On the way back from the rainforest we stopped at another lovely little town called Paia. Paia was so nice, it had lovely boutique shops and a beatiful beach, we spent a couple of hours here just wandering around. Next trip, we hiked in the Iao Valley state park which was beautiful. We were hiking on a nearly overgrown path and our legs got so scratched from all the branches. It also rained throughout most of the hike so we got soaked! It wasn't too bad though, at least it was warm rain! Next was the road to Hana. The road was so windy but the views were beautiful. We stopped at a place where you could swim in caves which was cool, the water was freezing, nearly as bad as the north sea-but not quite!! There were two beaches here too, one had black sand and one had red sand, they were cool. We also hiked through a bamboo forest which was cool, its the first time we've ever seen a bamboo forest, it was really good. We were so tired after the hike after having hiked the day before as well. Next trip was another snorkelling day, this time at a different beach in West Maui. The snorkelling here was good we saw loads of different types of fish and another turtle. It was crazy, the turtle was actually swimming in among all the people on the shore line and kept popping its head out of the water right by everyone, we couldn't believe it. On the way back from this beach we stopped at a town called Lahaina. This town was also really nice, a lot bigger than the other towns we had been to. There were loads of shops and restaurants to look around and we watched the sunset over the sea. On one of the days that we didn't do a trip we hired a car and drove to Kapalua so that Phil could play golf at the Plantation course. For anyone not into golf, its a really good course where they hold a championship every year on the professional tour. So it was quite exciting for Phil to be able to play, and even more exciting that he had me as a caddy for the day!!! Not that I did much mind other than drive the buggy around which was fun! The course was beautiful and Phil played a good round of golf so he was happy! We had 12 nights on Maui altogether, it is a beautiful island. We didn't get very consistent weather, it seems to be totally different all over the island, even if you just drive for 20 minutes to another place. It didn't spoil it though we had lots of fun, looking forward to going back to Waikiki though!
