BULA everyone!! This is pretty much the only word you need to know if you go to Fiji! It basically means hello, everyone you see shouts Bula at you wherever you go. When we arrived in Fiji it was so good to feel the heat when we got off the plane! We then went into the airport to be greeted by men singing and playing guitars, it was really cool. We spent our first two nights in Nadi, one of the main towns, there isn't much to it just a small main street with shops, a bit scruffy but not too bad. From here we started our Feejee Experience trip around the main island. The Feejee Experience is basically a bus that takes you around and organises activities for you, it was good fun. On our first day we were first taken to the Natadola Beach for a picnic lunch which was nice, we watched the local kids playing volleyball and Phil did some body surfing in the waves! From there we were taken to a local village which was good, we got to look around but didn't see too many people because apparently they were having a siesta which is usually between 1 and 3 every day-not bad!! From the village we went to the Sigatoka sand dunes to try some sandboarding, the slope was so steep and you had to climb straight up it to be able to come back down so I sat it out but Phil gave it a good go, he even managed to stand up at one point! Our first stop was on the Coral Coast at a place called Mango Bay Flashpackers! We had decided to spend a few nights here and were really pleased we did because it was lovely. It definately was a flashpackers, apart from the toilets but that turned out to be the norm throughout Fiji. We tasted Kava on our first night here and it really wasn't pleasant. Kava is something that the locals drink, they reckon it makes them all chilled and relaxed, it is basically a plant root that is crushed up, mixed with water then served as a drink. It tastes bloomin awful and makes your tongue go numb!! Apparently the locals drink about 100 cups of it everynight, I really don't know why! Our next bus ride took us from the Coral Coast to Suva, and todays activities consisted of a trek through the rainforest and river tubing. The trek was pretty hard work, it was so hot and the ground was really slippy, it took us about 3 hours to complete it. At one point we were actually trekking through a creek, it ended up taking our trainers about 3 days to dry after that and they smelt so bad! The trek ended at the river where we got onto big rubber tubes and just floated down the river, it was so good, it was so nice just to lie there after the trekking! We arrived in Suva pretty late so we were taken into the city for dinner and then back to the hostel so didn't get to see any of the city. Next bus journey-Suva to Rakiraki. We did quite a lot today, first off we stopped at a tiny little town to get some lunch supplies, got some lovely fresh pineapple from the market and found a shop selling DVD's for $2, which is about 65p. We bought 4 and hoped they wouldn't be really bad quality, we've watched 2 so far and they've been perfect! From there we were taken to a local village school, this has got to be one of the highlights of the trip. The children are so nice, they get so excited when you arrive and they all want their photos taken! They like to look at themselves on the digital camera, bless them! From the school we then went to a different village and met the chief for a Kava ceremony, yes more Kava, not nice!! We all had 2 cups each and then the girls were taken to do some weaving and the boys continued with the Kava! I was glad not to have to drink anymore! Once the ceremony was over we then went to do Bilibili rafting. This basically consists of going down the river on bamboo rafts, it was good fun but I spent the whole time trying not to get thrown off because the river was disgusting!! Phil managed to go flying over the edge a few times while trying to steer the raft which was funny! After the days activities we then arrived at a place called Volivoli beach. This was another place we had decided to stay for a few nights but it didn't turn out to be as good a choice as Mango Bay. It was so hard to sleep on a night because everyone was so noisy and all the tables are set up right outside the dorm rooms which was annoying. We also got a free dive here but the people messed us around so much and we ended up not being able to do it. It turned out to be a quite annoying few days and we were glad to be moving on!! Last bus journey of the trip took us from Rakiraki back to Nadi. We stopped for a curry in a town called Ba and then went to some mud pools just outside Nadi before being taken back to our hostel. We then spent a few nights in Nadi before heading out to Bounty Island...
