We arrived in Nuremberg when we were eating breakfast at 7.45am, another warm sunny day
Nuremberg is the 2nd largest city in the German state of Bavaria, most of the city was destroyed during WW11 in only 90 minutes, many of the historical building seen today have been rebuilt using the same stones. Hitler chose Nuremberg for his annual Nazi party rallies and built a massive circular structure next to a manmade lake, which was never completed. Plans found later showed pictures of a proposed huge domed glass roof. The parade grounds adjacent were also massive and again we were shown pictures of hundreds of soldiers marching past Hitler who was standing high above lording over the masses. We next went to the Nuremberg Court Room where the famous trials were held after WW11.
Next we were taken by coach to a market area in the town centre near a beautiful old church with many carved figurines. A very ornate clock with many moving figures just below is high on the tower. At 12 noon each day the bells toll and the figurines move, everyone stops to see this spectacle.
Back to our coach to return to our boat and lunch, after we have some free time to relax. We are also to pass through the tallest 3 locks this afternoon, being 24.70 metres.
What an impressive sight the "Leerstetten" lock is, it took almost an hour to negotiate going through the lock and is just so interesting to watch the procedure. Water is stored at the side of the lock and pumped into the lock to raise the water level, its amazing hour quickly the water level rises once the boat is in the lock. Once through the lock 60% of the water is able to be pumped back into the storage area next to the lock ready for the next boat.
Tonight we are having on board entertainment from Valerie May an entertainer born in Nuremburg, but able to speak and sing in several languages. She was excellent and sang all songs that everyone could relate to from many different European countries.
So ends another beautiful day, can thoroughly recommend this way of life, what a pity it will end in only a few days!!
Chat again soon.
