Friday 18th April 2014
Well after many gloriously sunny days we awake to a cloudy quite cold day, with threatened rain, cannot complain we have been so lucky and after today the sun is forecast to return.
We woke to see more vine clad steep hillsides of the Wurzburg area, which is located in the north western part of Bavaria. Wurzburg is a university city and the centre of the Franconian Wine region, noted for its dry white wines and unique flacon shaped "Bocksbeutel" bottles.
We selected the Rothenburg tour today, which is an hour's drive through magnificent countryside, from Wurzberg in the Tauber Valley. As usual everything was beautifully organised for us, even an umbrella in the wardrobe for our use.
The village of Rothenburg is completely surrounded by its city wall and is full of charm and history at every turn. Being Good Friday all the usual touristy stores are closed but there are coffee houses open. The town is full of colourful old character buildings and is also famous for the Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas Store
Our guide from the coach gave us lots of information via our audio units we are supplied with, as we walked around this picturesque village, we then had an hour and half to explore on our own. We walked to the end of the town to where there is a beautiful garden area, at the end of the garden a wall looked out over the magnificent Tauber Valley with ancient houses dotted in the distance. We next climbed the old stone steps of the wall surrounding the town, to walk one section to the next tower, it would have formed an important protection for the town in ancient times. Our next plan was to go into one of the coffee shops to get warm and be dry for a while. Good plan and many others from our group had the same idea, I think it was the best coffee I had had in a long time!!
We met up with our guide at 12.15pm to be taken back through the wall of the city to our waiting coaches and back to MS Amadante and lunch.
A free afternoon, we could go into the town of Wurzberg but it's still cold and wet so I'm catching up on the blog and having a bit of slow down time.
Tonight we are going the other restaurant on the top deck called "Erlebnis Restaurant" where only 24 guests can be seated at a time, we have been told by other passengers the food is even better than the usual one. Each passenger is invited to go at least once during the cruise to be treated like royalty for a few hours.
Bon Appetit!!
