We are Sailing
The stay in Poros was really good, and it was a bit sad to go. But if we don't keep on the move we wont get enough time in the Islands.
Today we are setting out for the Island of Kythnos, of which Kith nos is the main town. There are no Marina facilities as such, but we are looking for an anchorage. Brian Stuart and Diane got up at about 7, woken by the church bells in the church about 15m away. Bloody loud and sounded like a guy tapping on a drain pipe with a stilson. And just in case you missed it the first time it tolled again at 8.00.
Diane went to the bakery for some fresh bread and by the time she was back, the boys were ready to get moving. By the time I had got out of bed at 10.30 we were well kn our way. I was a bit cranky because I missed the breakfast the girls normally make. Cereals, fruit salad and Greek Yogurt. It tastes great. Today's trip was around 42 nms, at 6 knots it will take us about 71/2 hours. By the time I had got to the deck, Stuart and Heather, and Diane had gone downstairs to relax and read. Cheryl was on deck with Brian, so we did a swap and she went down to read also. The wind had started to come up, so we made decision to raise the headsal, which was a good move. We increased our boat speed from about 6.5 knots to 8 knots plus. We were really scooting along, and making good time. Other than the excitement of moving fast, it was really a straight sail, seeing a few large ships, and one that a poor little tug was trying to tow into the wind. You had to feel sorry for the little tug. Then just as we were getting complacent, bang, and we hit what a large wave out of the blue. I got wet, Stuart who by this time joined us, probably wish he hadn't because he got very wet, but worse was to come. Diane came marching up from down below, "Brian will you slow down, I just got drenched, and so is our cabin." Then Heather chipped in, and so is our cabin, and Stuart so is you pillow! (we actually think it was hers, and she
swapped it") So literally Dianne had taken the wind out of our sails, and there was a little Silence or a while. We went through and closed all the hatches, cleaned up a bit, and revved the Flight 11 up again. What great fun.
As Brian predicted, we reached Kythnos earlier than expected, and we found this beautiful bay on the NW end of the Island to moore the boat. Stuart and Brian did their usual good job at mooring, and we were ready for lunch. After lunch we all (except Dianne ) went fro a swim. The water was a little fresh, but the swim was most enjoyable. Bri..an did a little diving to check out the boat for damage from the day before. All was OK. We all showered and cleaned up, and spent the afternoon relaxing and watching the comedy show next door, with guys and there lifeboat, and the motor which wouldn't start. There was a nice french girl giving us all a free show on how to shower on the back of a boat also.'Most delightful. Then out of the blue, this very large sailing boat entered the little bay.
