We have made great use of our rental car, and have seen a lot of the island Crete. It is about the same size of Vancouver island, and we drove east towards the main city of Heraklion and south for a visit to the ruins of Knossos. Here lies ruins of the Minoan people, the first known settlers in Ancient Greece from about 4000-7000 Bc. The remains of a great palace are here. We had an adventure trying to visit a winery here too, however google maps lead us up the most ancient of roads which was narrow rocky and overgrown with high grass. It wasn't until the car stalled out and we were stuck on a ledge that we decided to abandon this mission, and return to the wine store in town.
Another adventure led us to a 15th century Monastery which has a cave where the Goddess Artemis was worshipped and a hike down a rocky slope. We enjoyed our traditional Cretan lunch in the Venetian town of Chania, with rabbit, goat and chicken stews cooked in a clay pot fire....delicious!! It is a lovely ocean front harbor with old beautiful buildings. Cobblestone streets lead you in and out of allies and stores beckon you in. It is lovely! But today in the midday sun , we were overheated with a 35•C temp. Forget that....we returned to our villa for a swim in the water. And here I sit on the veranda as the sun prepares to set. I could get used to this life !
