April 3 - Brook - This morning we had a group vocational meeting. We went to the Health and Disability Advocacy Service and commissioner's office. We had a very interesting discussion about New Zealand's advocacy service and the processes. We were also very interested to discover some of the similarities and differences between the Canadian and American systems that came about in our discussion. Both the advocacy representative and the commissioner's office representative were very generous and gave us quite a few resources to take home highlighting their educational materials for providers and advocates.
We were then taken to a lunch restaurant called the Sitting Duck by one of our home hosts Graeme Emerson. After a nice break and yummy Seafood Chowder Graeme dropped Becca and I off at Auckland City hospital for our individual vocational afternoon. Each of the other team members went on their way to a different placement.
Becca and I met with Professor of Paediatrics Ed Mitchell. He had a number of different researchers present the results of their recent and ongoing investigations to us. Becca and I were very excited to learn the practical application of customised antenatal growth charts in our practice to help predict babies that might be born small for their age and then hopefully be able to decrease their negative complications. We also spent time learning about the risk factors and on-going studies in the areas of Stillbirth and SUDS (Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrom in infancy). I think I can say that we both will take back new knowledge, information and practices home to our patients in the north.
